badlands, black hills, wall drug (which is just a bunch of shops basically that have a western look to them), mount rushmore, you could go to the corn palace in Mitchell if you're driving from east to west (its pretty far from rapid city) and you could drive just across the border to wyoming and see devils tower, or take a scenic drive on needles highway, oh and crazy horse

One thing I can tell you is the State has the lowest per capita crime rate of all 50 states. So aside from the beautiful terrain, culture and so forth you can feel safe. Enjoy!
