Confederacy.
The federal gov't needs limitations.
Slavery wouldnt have lasted much longer anyway. It was doomed to fail due to the overproduction of cotton cutting the price to the point where the UK no longer needed or wanted to buy more.
The war was about secession, right? Why was it ok when the north repeatidly threatened to leave, but it was horrible when the south did it? Lincoln drove the country apart, not the south. He was warned what would happen if he took office, yet he ran anyway. The south always gave the north their way in the interest of keeping the union secure. That was no longer important once it became clear that the south had no voice. Lincoln managed to win without receiving a single electoral vote from the south--that is a clear indicator that the federal gov't was not representing the people.

American by birth, Southern by the grace of God.
It gawls me to no end at the ignorance spouted by those who do not take the time to learn about what they preach upon. And you are right, slavery was not the only reason for the war. It was what those dam Yanks used for propaganda for the war. Not only was the south fighting because of the oppression of the north in congress, but our pride as the yankees tried to make us look like heathens because of slavery. I do not agree at all with a person owning another person. So does that make my statement an oxymoron? No it doesn't. Like Melody said, relearn the history lesson people!
If allowed, I would have fought and died by southern brothers.

Tough choice. However, have always believed personally that the closer the government is to the people the better the government can know what the people need and want. looking at the power the federal government has today and their ability to ram decisions down their citizen's throats would probably go for the South even though I am in the North and my family fought to preserve the Union.
As an aside there were many men who were in the North who fought for the South and many men in the South who fought for the North.

Being a southern belle, I would have supported the confederacy all the way. I have much pride in my heritage.
And as to why...
I will forsake the history lesson here, as I fear of getting on my soap box, and simply say, people should really take the time and relearn the history lesson.

I would have fought for the North. My family fought for the North, I live in Illinois, also I believe in a stronger federal government, and weaker state governments. I don't care for the idea of states deciding to leave the Union. That's like your arm deciding to separate from your body because it wants to be free.

Like R. E. Lee, I was born in VA, but have the ideals of the north, and would probably fight for my state and family.
