Lots of Canadians want real pro football in Canada and all we get is a fifth-rate league whose players probably couldn't beat US college football players.

Hi Bill,

First off, the moronic Maple Laffs fan above me is a little upset since his club hasn't won the Cup since 1967, so I felt the need to point that out. :o)

I think the problem with bringing the NFL to Canada is lack of popularity from coast-to-coast. In my vast travels across this country, I've found that football is much, much more popular in Alberta and Saskatchewan than it is anywhere else in Canada.

To answer your question, NFL football lacks the die-hard support in Canada that it garners in the USA. For the reason alone, I can't picture the NFL coming to Canada.

Heck, if the CFL lost the support it gets in Western Canada, I think the league would probably fold, because the Eastern Division can't match the attendence and support of the Western Division.

The Super Bowl is still one of the most popular televised events enjoyed by Canadians, however, it really is a flavour-of-the-month kinda thing that soon wears off.

Sadly, if the NFL were to put a team in Canada, it'd be in Toronto because of the 10 million people living in southern Ontario, not to mention the spill-off fans from states like New York and Michigan who would travel to Toronto to watch games.

Toronto is not a sports town. It's a Leafs (Laffs) town and outside of Maple Laffs hockey, no one in Toronto really gives a damn about any other sport (except soccer these days).

Just a few thoughts, maybe I'm right, maybe not.

All the best to you.

I disagree. If the CFL were to fold they would lose a few teams when the NFL came in. The NFL wouldn't keep teams in Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Edmonton, and Calgary. Maybe even Montreal. The NFL would keep Toronto and BC because of the size of the cities. But that's it. The other 6 teams would be relocated to the United States and renamed. They would lose their uniqueness. Bad idea. The CFL will never be number one in Canada. But it does have it's fans. Leave the CFL alone. Keep the NFL out of there. And I'm an American who is saying this. The CFL is fun to watch and I enjoy it. EDIT: Groo The Wanderer - Thank you for the kind words. The NHL will always be my first love. Yes, I'm a Wings fan, LOL. That's ok if you're a Blackhawks fan. I'm actually happy to see that the franchise is heading in the right direction. I also prefer the CFL over the NFL. I grew up in a border town. I got Canadian channels in better than American channels. What I was trying to get across was the corporate money in those smaller cities. That's why the NFL wouldn't keep them. And that is also why I don't want the NFL in Canada. The CFL is fine the way it is, although I would like to see the Ottawa Renegades finally come back.

I think, even though everyone I know in Canada (family, friends, etc) wants professional football, they like having the CFL league around. Here is why:

1. When a player makes it to the NFL (like Flutie), every time the player is mentioned, they (family) like to remind me "He's Canadian." (Along with any other celebrity for that matter)

2. It's also fun to brag about how Canadians can do it in three downs....That's one better than the States!

3. It's fun to put player like Ricky Williams on the field and say to the NFL, "are you guys serious, this guy is good? Why are you worried about him getting hurt?" It reinforces point two.

4. I guess its also sort of a "ha ha losers, you're never getting in here, we already have a league...leave your NFLs version of Shay's Rebellion at the border before we bust a War of 1812 on your bums again!" (This has been mentioned to me lots by my Canadian friends. They use this line all the time).

Ummm.... Well..... first..... it is the "National" Football League.... not the "Continental" Football League... so as a fan of the NFL I would not like to see it allow teams from Canada. If any part of Canada wants to be part of the United States I would strongly consider supporting a team in those areas... until then.... We have our football, Canada has theirs.... the best bet would be to lobby for Canadian football to adopt the NFL rules. Nothing saying they couldn't....

The next time the NFL expands have one of
the largest cities that would support a team
apply for a spot. That is the way Montreal got
a base ball team. [ I think}.

perhaps the cfl should change its format to be like nfl games. instead of the long fields and high scoring games they have. the nfl probably cant use their money and political power to fold the cfl like they did to the usfl and the xfl. in that case hooray for the cfl.

American "handball" is for weak little yankee pansies who need 100 lbs of gear because they are too scared to take a hit.

Furthermore, there is not enough interest in this pathetic excuse for a sport in Canada. We play a real sport called hockey.

How do you fold a "compact fluorescent light bulb"? I think those cute little light bulbs should ALWAYS be around (wink, wink).
