Federalists supported having a strong central government, seeing that the Articles of Confederation had left the country very fragmented and consequently weak. Anti-Federalists were against a central government, fearing that any kind of central government would grow into a tyrannical rule as had been seen in places like England.

That the Federal gov't would have the power to override the states (hence the 10th Amendment). Eventualy they were proven right by Lincoln and many others down to Bush today.
