What is the purpose of moles on the body?

Most things about the body have evolved for an evolutionary advantage, so what is the purpose of moles? Is there any at all? Some study has recently suggested that people with more moles have a higher life expectancy - is this truth or fiction?

Moles are a result when the normal skin division and differentiation process fails. Epithelial cells mutate and in the process begin to proliferate more than normally.
The immune system has the ability to scan for aberrant or cancerous behavior and destroy those cells. However this does not block mole growth. They seem to have a built in down regulation that steps in to block tumor development.
So the presence of moles has lead to research in how this class of cancerous cells is regulated.
The selection of a cell that can respond to its own loss of regulation makes sense. Skin cells take the brunt of UV exposure that is very likely to cause damage to DNA. This will lead to cancerous changes. A cell that can block these changes from progressing will allow the organism to produce more progeny.
This process is called oncogene-induced cell senescence.
Oncogenes are the mutated result after a normal gene is damaged. They lead to the uncontrolled growth seen in cancerous cells. Cell senescence is cell old age or in this case the inability to replicate or genetic death. This is what we see with every mole, a successful response to a tumor where the cells can no longer divide. They are still part of the skin holding out infectious agents yet no longer threatening to grow out of control.

So having a mole means there was another healthy response to DNA damage. In that sense people with moles do have a better life expectancy. It is much better to have the ability to produce moles than skin cancer if you have a genetic predisposition to it.

Moles or any birthmarks are just pigmentation on the skin. hey are random occurrences, with some people having higher odds because of genetics.
