He was like a father figure to her. It doesn't hurt that he is wealthy and powerful.

He was the one person who could boost her career. Unfortunately, that's how a lot of female singers get ahead. They get romantically involved with their bosses. Diana Ross and Ronnie Spector are two other examples.
