If it has a mouth it will bite. Before you go buy a snake please do at least 50hrs researching and reading books about snake husbandry. Please do not get a snake just to impress your friends. As I said, all snakes can bite. The only snake that has ever bitten me was a corn snake. According to literature its one of the most docile. I was doing something stupid and not paying attention. Please do your research and make sure you are willing to feed live food and to pay for a good habitat with a mister and proper humidity and temp. If you can do all these things than I would go to a herp show and find a good breeder that is part of the herp society and see what is in your price range. Don't get anything larger than a corn snake for your first go. I would say some sort of a tree snake would be good. Good Luck!

All non venomous snakes are safe, but each causes varing degrees of damage when they bite. The larger the snake, the more damage. If you are worried about being bit, the safest snake for you would be a rubber one. No way to get by that.

What exactly do you mean by "safe"? All snakes can bite when nervous or threatened, you won't find one that doesn't.
Personally, the snake that I feel the most comfortable handling is the ball python. They tend to be pretty mellow and tolerant of handling and are usually very easy to take care of as most aren't usually picky eaters and do not grow too big. They're very popular because of their easygoing temperament, so I definitely recommend them to beginners.
Of course, just like every other animal, each ball python has a different personality. Some have nasty temperaments and will not hesitate to bite (but they are constrictors, so they do not have venom), so be careful.

You'll find that there are plenty of safe snakes to keep as pets. I'd recommend picking up a general book on snakes to find one that matches the potential growth size, feeding requirements, habitat, etc... that you want.

The only absolutely "safe" snake is a rubber snake. Any snake, under certain circumstances, can deliver a bite.
BTW: it's GARTER snake, not Gardener, garden etc.

No snake is "safe" they all bite. But ball pythons are known to be very docile. Corn snakes are also fairly good with handling, so I hear. Mine is a little pain in the butt.

for a beginner i suggest a kenyan sand boa. they will stay small, docile and slow and are easy to take care off. they only need a 10-20Gtank to live in. they are also not picky and will readliy eat frozen thawed mice.(cheaper)
