putting on good shows gets fans to go see them and if teh show is great fans tend to buy the album to support them. then interact with the fans.

Pretty much make music, sign autographs and don't say anything that will anger your target audience.
Once you're on top, have some wild experience get all over the tabloids so the desperate people would wish it was with them.
Release your albums only every three years so:
a) you have plenty of material
b) people will actually start to miss your songs on the radio
c) you can get rest. Touring is tough.
And never date a fan. Always date the most painted-up bimbo to run the press when it doesn't work.
