Tell me what area you live in, and I'll give you the nearest address of a knowledge school, who in turn will explain the procedures for becoming a London taxi driver.
But let me tell you this; as a London cabby for the last 17 years, it is extremely hard work, both mentally and physically, there are no short cuts, you've got to be out there to learn it the right way, if you expect to do it full time, kiss goodbye to your social life, because it takes over, and becomes an obsession, try not to involve any of your immediate family when learning it, this will just cause break up's and bad feelings.
At the public carriage office (tfl) they have notice boards with other people just starting out of whom requires call over partners, the school will also advise you this, do not join a school as yet, just get some advice, they will give you all the (Runs + points) once you get to a certain stage, normally half of the blue book (the runs), but they will initially help you with the first batch, clip board, point sheets, maps etc.
And then after two and a half to three years, you will have earned the right to wear the much revered green badge, And then, and only then, does the real hard work start. Good luck.

I used to work for a taxi advertising company and had very few women on the books. When we did put adverts on women's cabs we used to book them all the time for PR work as they were the nicest people and very punctual! I say go for it and being female has nothing to do with learning the knowledge - we've got just as big brains as men! Enjoy riding round London on your scooter for the next 3 years and good luck.

My friend was a female taxi driver not in London but in my area. She had to take a kinda course and test to get her Taxi drivers licence, then she used her own car but she had to get the care registered as a taxi vehicle and she had to change her insurance which cost about £5000. From what I know you need to have full knowledge of roads and you have to do a test on it as well.

you need to know most of the roads and have a test, and if your having your own car you will have to think about paying for a drivers badge, taxi liscense plate on the back, you have to renew them and have to pay the boss of the firm rent for the taxi equipment aswell. maybe different if you wnt to be a black cab driver

dann_501 has the knowledge!
fyi, currently 1.6% of london cabbies are women - transport for london are now offering ethnic minorities and women more opportunities to become cabbies (including things like free scooters and childcare) to try and equal this out

Bin laden has become like 'Phantom' the ghost who walks. If what you are telling is not a joke then this is what terrorism is, it keeps on scarring common people.
