The meaning of life is to find your own individual path, to realize that hope is only on the other side of adversity. it is about love and hope, understanding and trust, god and belief and obtaining inner calm to find your way to heaven.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

As humans we think of ourselves as the end of the line in evolution. As such we feel that our lives as individuals must have some greater meaning. When we consider that we as a species comprise a given percentage of the biomass based on our consumption as top predator this is an easy trap to fall into. The true meaning of life should be considered from the perspective of the biomass itself. We as humans have been around as a numerical percentage of the biomass for a relatively short span of time. Especially considering the length of time the biomass itself has been present on this planet as a "consistent mass". We are nothing more then an expression of the biomass. Another permutation that it's created in it's own game of survival and expansion. For the question to be relevant it must be asked "What is the desired goal of the biomass"? In this context the answer is simplicity itself. The goal is to expand beyond the confines of the planetary biosphere. To achieve this goal it is necessary to create a permutation capable of designing the next stage of evolutionary consciousness and humans with their mechanical ingenuity seem well equipped to do so. If, in fact, they don't destroy themselves in the process. It's been said that necessity is the mother of invention. The biomass is counting on that. That's why we were created so virulent.

I don't think there is a generic meaning of life. I'm not religious so that rules out a whole bunch of 'answers'.

As previous poster says, we just are. We may have our own meaning for our own lives but this is a very individual thing, which could be anything as diverse as being put on this planet to serve a greater being or simply to love and be loved by those around us.

I don't have any particular single meaning to my life, but lots of components which combine to give my life meaning. I also think these can change over time, experience and maturity.

Try and imagine this:

The galaxies are cells and the stars are the nuclei and the planets are the protons and electrons. So, everything that we see in our universe is part of a bigger entity and we are that bigger entity that those from our cells make up. So on and so forth forever, both bigger than us and smaller than us. So when our solar system or galaxy is destroyed someday, it is just a cell dying in the bigger entity. The universe is all of the entities combined into one. That is my take on the physical existence of life.

Mere existence can't give meaning. What is the meaning of a pebble on the planet Mars?

Meaning comes from living for a real purpose. Real purpose can only come from God.

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (noted philosopher, mathematician and atheist)

The Christian idea is that our purpose is to seek God. A relationship of communion with our Creator gives meaning.
