It is effective (97-99.7%), but it has a lot of side effects. The most common is weight gain (70% of all users notice some gain, over half have significant gain). It has been linked to headaches, skin problems, depression, hair loss, and loss of sex drive. I had all of these side effects when I was on it. Some women stop menstruating while on it, some bleed the whole time. It takes 6-8 months to clear your system, too.

It also severely depletes bone density levels, and they do not restore once you stop the shot.

You should do some more research and talk to your doctor before getting the shot.

It is suppose to be very effective, and the people I no have had little problems with it. The only effects that has been consistent with all of them is weight gain and some even had heavy periods. The weight gain is substantial though, 15+ pounds. I even have a friend that is a bit on the "fluffy" side and her O.B. wouldn't even give her the shot because of the weight gain. If you are worried about weight gain, then check into other options, however if that is not a concern for you~I hear that the depo shot is effective in preventing pregnancy. However you should do what is the most effective without the side effects. If you have had a child, have you thought about an IUD?? This is the most effective form of birth control short of tying your tubes, it's effectiveness doesn't deplete with medications or missed pills. There are no side effects and the IUD can be in place from 2-5 years (and some even 10!). Just a thought, although they are only recommended for women who have had children.

Its HORRIBLE and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

The ONLY good things about it are the possibility of no periods and you get a shot every three months.

There are so many other health risking serious side affects that I would not recommend it to anyone. TOO many women suffer because of this shot!

Check out the reviews at http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-control-methods.aspx and google "depo provera lawsuit" and read up!

depo shot is a good way of birth control, it's safe no constance pill taking or ring fitting, the only down side about it is you shouldn't be on it for long periods of yrs because it breaks down the calcuim in ur bone. limit it to 5yrs or so. good thing is you wont have to deal with ur periods anymore for 5 yrs.
