Spain was trying to find a new route to the Indies because the silk route had been taken over by the ottomans, making it impossible to travel. The Spanish then decided to travel around Africa to get to India or China, but Columbus had been doing research and thought he could make it to India by traveling across what they called the Ocean Sea, the Atlantic. He first tried to get financed by Portugal, then Venice, then finally found hope in Spain. It took them a few years to finally set sail, but it was worth it for Spain.
