hi Josh properly, that relies upon on the steel and definitely, not all metals react with oxygen. yet for human beings that do, you get an Oxide formed. some metals are so reactive they variety oxides with oxygen at room temperature, some examples are iron, aluminmium, magnesium, sodium, calcium etc. some metals choose some encouragment, commonly via heating them to get them to react.

Oxygen is highly electronegative and metals aren't. The metal will donate the electrons in it's outer shell to Oxygen atoms giving the metal ion a positive charge and the Oxygen atom a negative charge. The difference in charges brings the two ions together to form a new substance.
Example:
2Fe(II)+O2->2Fe(+2)+2O(-2)->2Fe(II)O

The oxygen bonds with the metal, and you end up with a metal oxide.
oxygen + metal = metal oxide

Oxidation occurs. Iron-based materials rust, copper corrodes and turns green, zinc and aluminum get white and crusty, silver tarnishes, etcetera. Most metals will degrade with prolonged exposure to oxygen. Gold is pretty resistant, though.

It creates an oxide reaction - it can vary, sometimes the reaction will be VERY conbustable, on others it may only damage a metal physically over time. 2 good examples are magnesium oxide and iron oxide. Either way however it will need a catalyst
