Ok, a guy walks into a bar at 4 am. Odds are this guy is already needing to go to sleep. However, he is out and wanting to party. He stays and drinks until 7 am. Oops. Sun will be coming up in a bit. Need to get home and get some sleep. Now the drunk and exhausted driver hits the road. Plenty of time to run over those who get up early to go to school or to work.
Think about it. In the balance of freedom and public safety, you have to set a limit. Having the bars close at 2 am is a very good idea. Those people who have had too much to drink will now have to go out and hit empty roads. The amount of killing they will do will be limited.
How will having bars open at all times help the public? There are definately ways that it will hurt the public. You talk about drunk drivers. Those are not antiquated. They happen every single day and they kill people every single day. If you do not believe that then you have some serious problems.

In my state a bar is not required to close at all. However, the sale of alcohol from any source is prohibited between the hours of 2 am and 6 am so what point would there be in staying open. I am sure the law exists because some "do good" state rep decided that it would cut down on crime.

Antiquated laws based on religious and moral reasoning that need to be reconsidered.
Where I live it was just in the last few years that bars were allowed to be open on Sundays. You could have a drink with a meal in a restaurant but no bars or lounges.
Also, up until this year no lounges could operate VLT's on Sundays and the casinos had to be closed.

The time they are allowed to serve alcohol until is a CITY issue. The city i live in can serve until 2am, the next city can serve until 4am. there is a bar in that city that closes at 4am and opens at 6am. So why do they have to close? Well there would be a huge liabilty issue for each bar keeping someone there for 24hrs drinking, alchololism would increase, noise pollution, many more DUI's would occur, more and more people would slowly waste away, not get up for school or work, not see their families, it would be a HUGE chain of events.

I used to go to clubs and raves in Vegas and LA in the late 90s, and they would go all night!! This shutting everything down at 2am is a fairly recent phenomenon! I'm not opposed to stopping liqueur sales at 2am but forcing the whole thing to shut down is horseshit. I think the culture is going back to Victorian times and the roar is dying off! Around 2007 I started seeing people go out in closed groups being adverse to talking to strangers!l. I also see the strong independent woman going away as well! 10 years from now I expect people will be back in churches and partying will be with cookies & milk and close at 9pm on weekends!

1)Public safety explains everything if you are in your right mind. Sober folks understand the logic and I'm sure law enforcement and all the law abiding peace loving citizens in the neighborhood do also. Something called property values for the merchants and residents in the area comes to mind as well. Folks have the right to take the party to a private residence.

That is actually a good question..people have different schedules etc. So why does only the people that fit the "bar time" get to have all the fun??It's not fair ;-( The bars close at 2am in Michigan & that's when things just start to get fun.I know in Chicago they are open til 4.I'm not sure who decides this.....sorry i didn't answer the question but i think it is an interesting ????

So the Police do not have to be that at 6 or 8 AM to stop fights or solve murders. Plus Britney Spears would likely live in a bar.

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I know there are some issues with noise levels in residential areas.
