Who thinks that teenagers should be reading not watching tv and playing with i-pods. I went to a wedding this past weekend and had a conversation with a few young adults. Kids and young adults these day have the intelect of box of paper clips.

I did not mean to generalize and apologize for coming across that way.

Carmen..while I applaud your sentiment, and agree that more reading should be encouraged..

May I point out that your post might have had a bit more impact had you used spell check..and checked your wording before you hit 'submit.'

"..have the intelect of box of paper clips."

(it's 'intellect' and you forgot an 'a' before 'box.' Life..it is ironic at times is it not? LOL!)

I just turned 19 and I've read over 47 books in the past 3 years plus all my text books for the college classes I've taken over the past 2 years. Some of my friends enjoy reading just as much as I do, but others would rather text or watch tv. I think you need to update your Q to include the words "most" or "majority." A few people do not represent the whole.

Don't judge all teenager by conversations you had with a few people. I have met many very intelligent 12 year olds! But, I do agree with you. Kids who read are generally smarter than those who watch more TV. I think it's the parents who should encourage their children to read various books.

I don't have time to read anymore for free time, but I do read for school and I have an A in Language/English/Literature. I used to read 2 books in a day, but that's changed. But, I do read when I get a chance or when I have to. :]

You shouldn't say that ALL teens are like that today. There are still some of us smart ones left.lol.

I think it's because parents don't take the time or don't have the time to introduce the joy of reading to the kids when they are very young. It's easier to put on a Cd with bedtime stories than actually reading them...

Laziness, both on the parts of the kids and the parents, fueled by toy and video game companies making "learning" games that are advertised with things like "Let your kids play games, as long as they're our "learning" games!"
Peer pressure, i.e. "Kids who read are dorks!" Never bothered me, but then again I never cared.
Sadly, Y!A contributes when kids log on and post their homework so they don't have to think about it themselves. (Although the moderators are doing a good job of stopping most of those now.)

I think this is ones opinion or they just didnt want to talk to you....Mr. Intelligent.........the kids are smart and practical and read...just has nothing to do with what you were talking to them about because its not an interest to them....you should of started talking about the computer and the I-Pod....they would of probably blown your mind away..

.(Alot-but not everything comes from books, someone has to ''think'' of things as well)

People spend their free time on the computer or playing games. I have been buying audio books on Ebay and try to listen to them while i am on the computer.
