I need to put a power commander on my 99 R1, I know what a commander does, I don't know what it connects to, how to install it, or even how much it should cost me. How difficult is a commander to install?

You can buy one from J&P Cycles online. they are about $250.00

Easy to install, you also need to put a K&N Airfilter on as well.

If you have a laptop you can tweak to power commander in your own garage.

Install time is 1 hr.

Another choice is the Fuel Pak, which works very easy.

First things first...

Your '99 R1 is carbureted. A power commander is for fuel injected bikes ;)

If you're looking for a way to alter fueling (I assume you probably installed an aftermarket pipe and now need to change the mixture?), you need a jet kit.

There are a few companies that make jet kits... dynojet, factory pro, and Ivans (particularly popular among Yami fans). With any of them, you're going to have to remove the carbs, disassemble them, change jets, drill out pilot screw caps, possibly install airway restrictors, etc. Then you're going to need to put everything back together, sync the carbs, tune the needles and pilot mixtures, etc.

It isn't hard... if you've done them before. If you haven't, I'd enlist the aid of a trusted friend who knows what they're doing, or take it to a reputable shop.

Final Note: If you haven't changed the air filter and/or exhaust system, the return you'll get from a jet kit will be very small... probably not enough to warrant the trouble or expense.

It's plug and play. The commander comes with all of the instructions.

it adjusts the fuel/air mix to optimum for the type of air breather and pipes. it needs a computer to set it all up. it's best to set the adjustments when on the dyno to dial it in razor sharp. pc3 will run about 300. not all maps are created equal. is best to get it on the dyno and have it done right the 1st time.

Take it to a shop, get the price, and have it installed properly, Then sell it and buy a motorcycle.
