the garage is in the middle of nowhere and I don't much fancy sitting there all that time.

Am I within my rights to ask for a courtesy car of some sort?

Dolphin - one and a half hours is a very long time when you're busy!

The work on my Jeep is being carried out by Jeep and of course I realise its in my own interests to have it done. It is their fault though that the work needs to be done.

They should probably do a pick-up, leave you with a courtesy car - and return later with your own car. You might have to push the dealership to get what you want...they don't like giving something for nothing (in their eyes).

The short answer is that the garage is not required to offer a courtesy car. The work is going to be carried out by the garage on behalf of the manufacturer and as such the garage will make no money on the work.
Please bear in mind that the recall is there fr your safety and as such setting aside time to do this is in your own interest.

What car is it? The luxury dealers would give you a courtesy car with no problem. Other 'lesser' car dealers would give you a hassle considering the short time.

If you incurr any expenes while this will be sorted out, I would write to the car's manufacturer politely , stating that their craftsmanship is the reason why this car is being recalled, and you can't see why you should be out of pocket, and ask for a reimbursement of expenses.

It's not a question of "rights" my friend, their only obligation is to do the work. If you ask nicely they'll probably drop you home & pick you up when the work's done.

An hour and a half is not that long to wait, take a magazine or 2, a book to read, a radio, or MP3 player if you have one.

Ask. I am not sure of your entitlement but it may be part of the service. Just be thankful that you got a recall before failure not after it
