are they in your backyard? come in your garage? house? can you kids go out to play? can you mow the lawn? have your dogs been bitten?

There are 7 species of poisonous snakes here in SC. They don't usually come in the yard. Except that one Copperhead, that bit the dog, that I decapitated with a shovel. Silly snake, all coppery-gold on emerald green grass. He totally forgot about being cammoflaged.

None in garage, none in house. They prefer wild areas where their prey is.

Let any pie-sonous snickey snake get in front of my Cub Cadet, snake slaw!!

Educate your kids about identifying harmless and poisonous snakes. Then you can feel better about them being outside.

we have rattlesnakes and copperheads. we have seen both since we moved into our new house. snakes come around for a couple of reasons: food/water and shelter. If you have alot of places for them to hide or things like stack of old lumber or tin they will come and hide in that. High grass is also a place for them to hide. Make sure you keep your garage free of things that would attract mice. We keep our dog food in the garage but I use an air tight garbage can so the mice can't get in. If you get mice chances are you'll wind up with snakes. Our main problem with the snakes is that they cross our yard to get from the hill to the creek for water. There is not much you can do about that except keep you grass cut so they don't have a place to hide. Snakes a shy by nature and will leave an area if they are exposed.

Snakes need three things; food, shelter and water.
Treat for mice on a regular basis, remove all bird feeders from your lawn, and store pet food and trash in tightly sealed containers.
Remove firewood from your yard and any other debris such as old tires, shingles, unused automobiles,etc... (the stuff people leave laying around).
There's not much you can do about water except get rid of any standing water.
If you STILL see snakes in your yard you can buy sticky traps to put in your house, basement, deck, etc... They are specifically for snakes so they are about 3' long. Just remember you'll have to remove them if anything gets stuck to them whether it's a snake or not.
There is no chemical you can put in your yard as a deterrent. As soon as some one comes up with one they'll be rich!

we have a few poisonous snakes where i live. most of the time you don't even see them. there just as afraid of you as you are of them. i have come across one in the 10 years i've lived here and i just walked the other way and the snake went in the opposite direction. I do know people that kill them with a shovel when they see them but i don't believe in doing that. snakes are part of our environment and help keep the rodent population down. if you are really concerned i believe there is a product called "sanke away" you can probably find it at lowe's but i'm not real sure how it works.
