What is the best way to ddefine Marine(ocean) and terristerial(lan, non-marine)

Aside from the obvious (one is water and the other isn't (aside from rivers and such), you can define them in terms of plant and animal life, especially diversity, percentage of the Earth each covers, different biomes represented in each, and maybe even importance and placement in the evolution of plants and animals.
