It seems to me that at the core of this issue is the "status quo" Some people who have it good..... don't want change. People who are on the bottom want to think that they can aspire to a higher station in life.
You would have to do a historical layout of the caste society and who is at which levels & how they got there. Then look at current society and see who is impacted both positively & negatively by social change.
