I did...clearly the parents are to blame...you wouldn't take your 4 year old to go mountain climbing, why would you take them to play by dangerous cliffs with no railing or supervision...

either way those parents will have enough pain for the rest of their lives dealing with the guilt and loss, that should be punishment enough. They weren't unfit, they just made a mistake...

There is usually one or two deaths every year at Grand Canyon due to falling/jumping. Usually it's some dumba$$ climbing over the guard rail to get a better pic or scare some one or just to prove they are cool. As far as blame, I think this is a terrible accident that may have been prevented if the child had been in a stroller or otherwise restrained. As a mother, I can not imagine the pain those parents are feeling. I also understand how a child is there one minute and 100 feet away the next. We will just have to wait until the NPS makes finishes it's investigation. If you want more info on the story, look up the news paper in Flagstaff AZ. It's called the Sun, I believe.

That is heartbreaking to hear. I know accidents happen, but to fall off and into the Grand Canyon. I have been there, and you really have to be careful in some of the places that are not protected. Maybe a parent had a false sense of security if it was on one of the observation platforms with the rails around it. Something like this can happen so quickly, and caregivers have to be ever vigilant.

I haven't heard, but I am intrested in this b/c we are planning a trip to the canyon w/ our 4yr old and 2 yr old. How did this happen? But really I'm sure the parents take all the blame. When I am watching my children and they get an injury as I looked away I completely take the blame. If only...

I have been to the Grand Canyon. You'd be surprised how very few safety railings there are. Therefore I would be in physical contact with my child at ALL TIMES!!!

As a matter of fact, there are several signs posted all around the Grand Canyon to that effect.

I understand that some adult took 4 kids to play by the edge of the Grand Canyon in an area where there was no guard rail.... Seems to me that some adult was pretty irresponsible.

I haven't heard this yet, but they do having warning signs telling you to be aware of the danger & unstabled cliffs, so whoever was in charge of her are the one's who should have been watching her. That's really sad.~~
