or look at it this way in geometric figures

triangle + square = polygon

triangle + triangle = hexagon + hexagon + hexagon + hexagon + hexagon

triangle + triangle = polygon + hexagon

what is the value of the square?

the answer is the value of square is 3 but tell me how you found it!

or y = 3 ..y is y = 3? give me algebraic reasonin if possible

x+y=z
x+x = 5d --> d = 2x/5
x+x = z + d --> z = 2x-d
So x+y = 2x-d
x+y = 2x - 2x/5
y = x - 2x/5 = 3x/5
This says a square = 3/5 of a triangle

If y = 3, then x = 5, d= 2 and z= 8

makes no sense to me.

Are we solving for x, y and z?
GIVEN:
x+y=z
x+x = 5d
x+x = z + d

ESTABLISHED:
2x = z + d = 5d
=> z = 4d = x +y
=> x = 5d/2 = 4d -y = z - y
=>y = z - x = x -d = 4d -x
= d = y -x = 2x -z

... is there a picture to go with this problem?

You ask about the value of the square but only refer to triangles, polygons and hexagons.

For y = 3:
3 = z - x = x -d
z = 3+x
x = 3-d ALSO x = z -3 ALSO 4d - 3
d = 3 -x

... Expanding on Values for x;
x = 3-d & 4d-3, thereefore;
3-d = 4d -3
=> 5d = 6
=> d = 1 & 1/5
AS d = 3-x
6/5 = 3-x
=> x = 15/3 -6/3 = 9/3 = 3
x = y = 3
AS x + y = z
3 +3 = z
z = 6

X = 3
Y = 3
Z = 6
d = 6/5 or 1.2

In other words, you're tring to solve this system for y? You have 3 equations with 4 unknowns, so you can't solve it.
