Democrats are no longer focusing on bringing the troops home, they are only passing bills, "updating" the Bush policies in Iraq (contractors etc.). They have nothing to show for the earlier tough anti-war rhetorics. Will this hurt or help them in 2008 elections?

Crabby: I understand the shift to be their strategy, which is why I asked whether or not it will be a successful one. They don't have the voting power to bring the troops home, I think most of us know that.

Yes it will--big time. A lot of people are going to misunderstand this--just as you have. Despite the fact that the Democrats have been crystal clear about their strategy.

So--let me lay it out for you:

>The only way to force a withdrawal right now is to be able to override a veto--and the GOP doesn't have the balls to stand up to Bush yet, so that' s not going to happen right now.

>The Democrats have put BUSH'S funding request on the shelf for the next few months.

>In the meantinme, they will do what they can--like dealing with Bush's mercenaries--to keep chipping away at Bush's blody warmongering.

>In the meantime, also, this will give them time to get a lot of the other things done tha tCongress needs to be doing

>In a few months, therfore, the Democrats will be in a stronger position to again challenge Bush--even more so as the election campaign season will really be under way.

Its good political strategy. The Democrats are saving their best shots for later--when they will be the most effective.

After everything that's happened since the reign of Emperor Bush took place, I think that when the Democratic candidates don't maintain their stand, as usual, nor emphasize on the matters of concern or go around the vital issues we will have to face, most people would probably not care much because at this point, it's anything but another Republican in office.
If it will be the best outcome for the country, that remains to be seen.

taken that a number of Democrats are running for the presidency, I think they are trying to make a FEASIBLE plan moving forward and realize that "bringin the troops home" is no longer a choice, really.

It is a charade and a joke really! I mean, I don't even feel confidant that my vote (through electronic systems) will be counted correctly or attributed to the right presidential candidate anyway! soooo how do you move forward with a voting structure you don't trust? for me I focus on local issues, over the Presidential RAT RACE.

Neither. It's inconsequential at this point. Practically everyone has been reduced to choosing the "lesser of two evils". I doubt there's much that the Democrats can now than would be viewed as worse than what Bush has already achieved. Bush has screwed himself and whoever is going to be the next Republican presidential candidate in 2008.

This is the problem with democrats. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a lib thru and thru. They have a lot of bark but not enough bite. Howard Dean was the fire breathing dragon they needed, but they cut him off after his voice broke during a loud 'hurrah'. Apparently, we can have an idiot for a present who cannot even combine 2 complex sentences on his own, but we cannot have a president whose voice might break. I say we scrap BOTH parties and start all over. The dems are going to have to learn to fight intolerance with intolerance (or) fire with fire, or we'll never get anywhere!

I think they've been forced into cleaning their act up as a result of public outrage and the fact that their constant bickering was getting us nowhere fast. It didn't take long for the public to catch on.

Unification will certainly do them more good than harm.

They are counting on the fact that, even if the loony left hates them for not bringing the troops home, they will still be forced to hold their noses and vote democrat...

GW has placed America in a terrible position with the biggest strategic blunder in our history.

Now that he's made us step in it, the democrats realize that we have to clean the crap off of America's collective shoe.

Can't see how that will hurt them

I have never understood the logic behind liberal voting, so I will probably be off the mark on this one.
But yes, the Democrats started campaigning so early that we are able to see their insincere promises and policies become unraveled.

Interesting question. I think that most likely it will help them. In the public's eye, it appears as though they are getting things done and working to a common goal.
