its called eye black and it is used to cut down on glare from the sun or lights around the stadium. SOmetimes it is a greasey solution and sometimes it is a sticker like tape they use.

As others have pointed out it can help with the glare but many end up doing it out of habit or looks. This is why you will sometimes see football players wearing black paint even in a dome.

The black paint draws bright light to the blackness as opposed to the eyes, it helps receivers and quarterbacks alot.

It pretect's your eyes from the sun. I don't know how it does it but whenever i play football it helps my eyes when it's really sunny out and i can see better, also players like to put their team on it. Sometimes people were it just to look tuff.

Usually black guys have it their naturally....amazing. But I digress.....its to shade their eyes from the sun so they can see better and play better and make lots more money than you or I do.
