How do you describe comedy? I've heard people say it's a dry comedy or it's a stand-up. Can someone compile a list of different kinds of comedy and how someone would describe them?

If it's funny and makes you laugh then it's comedy.

The meaning of the word has changed over time. When Shakespeare was writing (1500's) there were tragedies or comedies: a tragedy had a sad ending and a comedy had a happy ending. In modern usage comedy means something which makes you laugh, or more generally, which is funny. It wouldn't be impossible to compile a list of different types of 'comedy' and their definitions, but it would probably be very hard to find definitions which everyone could agree on. People often use words without thinking about the details of their meaning and can be brought up short when asked to clarify what they mean.

By the way, I wouldn't put 'stand up comedy' in the same category, as in as a definition of the type of humour. It's about the way an act is performed and presented (one person on stage talking, monologue, few or no props) rather than about the kind of humour. The stand up comedian may make use of dry, slap sick or ironic comic traditions in his/her material.

Is that what you wanted?!

Comedy is great beacuse often, the comedy is about real life problems but it puts light on them by making the programme into a comedy. Basiclly making fun and having a laugh about life and not taking things too seriously I suppose. I love laughing, especially after a stressful day so I would describe comedy as fun, entertainment, enjoyment, looking at things in a positive way by having a laugh about things

Comedy is how people define comedy to their own...well, comedy.
I like a good stand-up comedian (that does not get hammered by the racist brigade). I liked "Love thy Neighbour", "Alf Garnet", those kind of programmes that were funny and did not receive crap from the PC Brigade - because the stupid PC-Brigade did not exist then.
Let`s be real honest here.
Comedy is Comedy, that`s all it is, full stop. Take the p1ss out of me because I`m English & white, I don`t give a f***, take the p1ss out of JC, I don`t give a f***.
Take the p1ss out of something that describes any Ragheads or Muslim idiots and they think the whole fecking world is against them..............Tossers.

Comedy is Comedy, full stop!

To me comedy is something that makes you laugh and smile and feel good for a short time. It is not something that hurts or insults others. It is somethng that removes you from every day pressures and decisions, and lets you have fun.
