People unfortunately lie for various reasons, but mainly to get away with something or to not hurt someone's feelings. Also people lie so much where it becomes a part of their nature and this is called a pathological liar.

I don't think ALL people lie just to lie. I think only pathological liars do that. Other people seem to lie when they are trying to protect themselves from others' wrath.

once they start to lie, they have to keep lying to back up their first lie...they usually forget what they lied about and then people like you ask this question.
