During the Cowboys' first game of the 1979 season, a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals (which Dallas won 22-21), the television announcer introduced the Cowboys as America’s Team and the nickname stuck.

Dallas’ Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry originally did not approve of the appellation. He felt that it would give opposing teams extra incentive to play harder. Eventually he gave in and actually came to like the name.

In 2003, NFL Films released a DVD collection chronicling the Dallas Cowboys franchise entitled The Dallas Cowboys: The Complete History of America's Team 1960-2003.

NFL Films is to blame.
NFL films produced a 1 hour film for each team after each season. Way back in 1978 or 1979 the Dallas Cowboys short film was titled 'America's Team'.

The reason was the Cowboys were and still are the most popular team in the NFL. They are also probably the most hated but that's what success does, creates bias on both sides. You don't see anyone running around hating the Arizona Cardinals, why because what is there to hate about them. You only pity them.

Just after the season that the Cowboys narrowly lost to the Steelers in the Super Bowl (1978) the complilation of highlights that NFL Films made of the Dallas Cowboys season was called "America's Team".

The producer of the film, who works for the NFL, said that he saw lots of Cowboy fans in the stands at every game he reviewed for the compilation.

This, by the way, is also borne out by the different owners of the NFL. Bidwell, the owner of the Cardinals, didn't want the Cardinals to leave the NFC East when the League re-aligned a few years ago. Why? His only consistant sellout for his usually underperforming team was against the Cowboys.

More recently, I was at the Dallas-Buffalo Monday Nighter, and there were thousands of Dallas fans there. Hundreds stayed after the game was over and cheered Emmitt Smith while he was doing a spot for ESPN.

So to answer your question, the Dallas Cowboys are America's team because the fans and the NFL said so.

Besides the fact that an announcer said it before a game they are also the most recognized and most economically successful team from America, not just in America but around the world. Any where you go you'll find yourself some Cowboy fans. Granted many, many people hate them but that comes with the terroritory of being the most popular and successful.

Texas has an immense independent spirit about itself. You know, "everything's bigger in Texas" or so they think. Ironically, it is written in the Texas constitution that they are a sovereign entity. They consider themselves a country unto themselves and anything from that state is numero uno. Thus, America's team can't be from anywhere else, according to them, than Texas.
Note: They also think the hole in their stadium roof is so that God can watch "His team".

Logically speaking I would hope America's Team would actually be America's Team...but there are 32 NFL teams and who knows how many other teams....No they're just Dallas' team...

America's Teams play in the Olympics..not the NFC East

I have never paid any attention to questions like that before this year. The red sox are America’s team, because every time they are on the road, many red sox fans show up in support of them in their away games. When they play the devil rays, I swear that there are more red sox fans there then there are there are rays fans. I guess the same is true for Dallas. Statistics man, stats !

That's what people in Texas call it. People in Texas can't point America out on the globe though, so don't take it too seriously.
