You can claim her if she lived or was dependant on you for more than 6 mos of the year. So, yes.

Contrary to what William C wrote, doing whatever works best is not an option. It is illegal for her to claim herself if you (or any person not married to her) can claim her, whether or not you do so. Go through the rules in the 1040 instructions on online to see if you can claim her. If you can claim her, you should. If you cannot claim her, and neither can anyone else, then she should claim herself.

If you provided more than half her support, then you should claim her on your taxes. Support includes more than just cash money - it includes what you paid for housing, food, clothing, recreation, etc. Assuming she lived with you during that time she was working, or lived with you for at least six months of the year - chances are you provided more than half her support.

If she lived with you for over half the year, and didn't pay more than half of her own support, you can still claim her and she can't claim herself.

touch base with an accountant; depending upon all the other factors that go into your federal or state tax returns; you may both come out winning even if you don't claim her now

You need to figure out who will get the largest refund by claiming her and go that route. The government can buy one less $600.00 toilet seat.
