Yes, there were ads on TV but they had to take them off because cigarette smoking is very dangerous to your health.
Trust me, I know. I smoked for 43 years and I have now 5 months to my credit as a non-smoker. Food, even the very air
smells better. Sexual energy is 10 times better, [If I had known
this I would have never started. It also hurts the people around you that doesn't smoke. Babies, children, old folks, everybody that you come into contact with is in danger. The worst part is you and your health--plus, if you are a smoker, then even if you aren't smoking around people, the stench of your nicotine-coated-clothes is enough to gag a maggot!!!!!!!
Please, if you don't smoke now, don't start!!!!!!!!!!!
E-mail me back and i will look up all the nastu medical terms for you.

Television is considered a general audience and all commercials must be G rated so no smoking or drinking ads are played during regular hours on regular channels. Cable channels can play what they want but they also avoid smoking commercials but still play drinking commercials since they generate more revenue and its harder for adolescents to get liquor than cigarettes. Plus ads for cigarettes are really a waste of money, nonsmokers don't want to start smoking for no reason, and smokers dont want to just quit, so there is little money to be made, most of it works on peer pressure and seeing others smoking.

They outlawed the commercials in the mid 70's. I remember Tom Selleck as the Marlboro Man back then.

In many countries, it is now illegal to advertise cigarettes. It was a huge success in the war against reducing smoking rates and preventing chronic disease.

I think they stopped sometime in the 70s - I seem to recall hearing about that when I was a kid.

It's against the law because of the children. But they have no qualms about advertising beer and alcohol to them.
