The Tao says to let go of everything and stop striving in order to become one with the Tao, which is wholeness; the complete emptying to allow the complete filling! peace

It's something like Neophyte said, I think, except that it's not like we already are, but that we have the potential to be. We have the potential to do a lot of good, and a lot of evil, but it is up to us to choose, because we have potential to be ANYthing.
to more directly address your question though, i think that we become whole unconciously when we finally see our surroundings, and put others before ourselves. But in the process, we have out of body insight into our own development. We see it, and we get an idea of what the whole picture can look like, but we never know. So I think it is probably the surest way to never become truly happy, because it is in the pursuit of a single piece at a time, that we come together to form a whole. It is all the small things combined that make the self. And without all the pieces, you'll never know what it is you're supposed to become.

Well, there's a saying that goes something like if you wait for something it will never come. You can't base you life around it, but don't completey forget about it either. It also depends on what you think it means to become a whole self. The important thing is to go throught life helping out as many people as you can, and making a difference in your own way. That is what i think a fully developed person is, to be able to be considerate and think of others when you don't have to.

Imagine an arc represents your entire soul and at birth it is completely full with what you know to be the truth of things. As you get older that changes as more of what you kew is proven to be possibly wrong until one day you are not certain about much of anything. The more you learn the less you know.
So, what does this have to do with what you are asking?
The more you approach the arc of completely not knowing who you are, the more you realize that you don't know if the arc is real or not, and before you know it you have exceeded your expectations.
There are no limits to your self, therefore; it can always be greater than you think it is, but; only by looking for your limits can you understand that they never truly existed.
In short, you could always prove yourself wrong.
The only route understanding your whole self is to define it from within or die never knowing doubt.

The only sure way to never become a Whole Self is to stop trying. If we never try, we never do... and, if we never do, we certainly will never Be.

It is rather a contradiction in terms. To be 'whole' implies complete while being 'self' implies individual. To be ONE you must be WHOLE and not separated into individual pieces as in completeing the puzzle.

We already are a whole self so that approach can be difficult at best. It's more like we need to remove the blocks that keep us from realizing that we are already everything we always sought to be. Thanks

There is nothing to try for, nothing to strive for, we are already whole, as Soul, so just BE that, and BE one with the Holy Spirit.

Trying is an excuse for not succeeding. You can try forever, or you can just do it.
