Around income tax time I bought a used 97 Cherokee it ran fine other than over heating due to the fan not working. Then all of the sudden the alarm starts freakin out on me and wont cancel when I use the proper key turns in the door. ( I don't have the remote ) So I have to unplug the battery and let the ECU reset and start over. The battery ended up dieing so I took it back and found out it had a bad cell. I put the new battery in and the alarm never came on but the jeep would still not start it only turns over. So I tested for a spark and didn't get one (altho I'm no mechanic). So I replaced the cap, rotorbug, and sparkplugs, still nothing, so I replaced the ignition coil, nothing. Now I'm thinking it may have something to do with the ECU maybe it's dead? But before I drop $200 into a new one I thought I'd ask for some other suggestions. Oh and I've already ground out the purple and orange wire that's supposedly to the alarm. I'd take out the alarm but I don't know where it is either

Are you getting fuel? check fuel filter oe pinched or broken fuel line or could be fuel pump. If you have fuel injection you should hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key to ON. if you do not hear it you need to get the pump checked.

SUV's in general don't have the best gas mileage but some do better then most others. I am taking a guess based on my old 97 Cherokee is any where from 15 to 20. give or take a few depending on what you have done to the engine, up grade? or rough ridding on the engine? mileage on the engine?. Hills or stop and go traffic kill the fuel too.

Fuel pump/filter maybe. Sounds like fuel isn't getting to the spark.

Take it to a dealer that will tow for free. It will not start with the the computer not identifying the correct code from your key. It could be that.

It's probably the stupid alarm disabling the ignition.

I don't have much knowledge on those though. Sorry.
