Not to be too pedantic, but the square *roots* of 144 are:
+12 and -12. Your math teacher might take points off if you forget that fact.

Quoting from Wolfram.com:
"Any positive real number has two square roots, one positive and one negative. For example, the square roots of 9 are -3 and +3, since (+3)² = 9 and (-3)² = 9. Any nonnegative real number has a unique non-negative square root; this is called the principal square root."

If you are asking for the *principal* square root (which would be the convention when asking for *the* square root), then it would be the non-negative answer of 12.

P.S. I get the feeling you are just asking this question for the sake of asking a question, but I thought I'd be mathematically thorough since you asked in the Mathematics section.
