No you dont need to avoid it. There no wrong way to sleep when pregnant. If will become uncomfortable and you will not sleep that way long before it would ever cause harm to the baby.
Getting stressed out and raising your BP restricts more oxdygen flow to the baby than laying on your back.
It would be different if you were bedfast and only laying on your back all day and night.

As you get further into your pregnancy you natural tendency will be to wake up on your back. OBGYN's will tell you to sleep anyway that you can that is comfortable. You can lay on either side, with a pillow between your legs to make you more comfortable. Ask your Dr. about this. Go and buy a body pillow it will make all the difference in the world. Please don't worry about sleeping on your back. Your body will do what it needs to do to help you get enough sleep. Believe me in 3 months you will be glad that you got some sleep, cause your not gonna get a lot after your precious bundle is born.

You are supposed to sleep on your side becuase when you sleep on your back, you are putting pressure on the vein that gives the baby all the blood flow. It can also make it hard for you to breath.
I sleep with a body pillow, its soft and fuzzy and I love it. I also found that the body pillow, supports my growing baby bump.
I snuggle up to it and put it between my legs, like I do with my hubby, before we both get too hot and we flip around.
I found that i don't have the back pain I used to have when I slept on my back, before I got preggers.
Most people toss and move around in their sleep. When you wake up, roll over on your side. That's all. No big deal.
It will take a little while to get used to sleeping on your slde if you aren't used to it. It took me about a month. But now I am getting the best sleep I did in months.
Good luck and sleep well. I hear you need it now, because when the baby comes it might not happen again.

Is sleeping on your back okay?
by Peg Plumbo, CNM (see more from this expert)
I'm in my 29th week of pregnancy and I have read that I should not sleep on my back. I have been sleeping on my side for the past several months, but it is very uncomfortable and I wake several times a night. Is it dangerous to sleep on your back while pregnant?
A
During pregnancy you should feel free to sleep in whatever position is comfortable.
You may have heard that during labor it is important for a woman to stay off her back. This is because of the potential for compromise to the uterine-placental blood flow. The heavy uterus lies against the maternal vena cava and can also cause light-headedness in the mother.
But during the pregnancy, your baby can generally accommodate to this very nicely unless he or she is severely compromised.
Rest easy.

Realistically, by the time you should not be sleeping on your stomach, you will find it is very uncomfortable to sleep on your stomach; and by the time you should not be sleeping on your back, you will find it is very uncomfortable to sleep on your back.

sleeping on your back FOR SOME WOMEN can cause a problem with circulation, but i have also read, when you are pregnant sleep any way you can, cause the bigger you get the harder it will be to get comfortable, and if you are getting the rest you need that is the most important thing

In late pregnancy, sleeping on your back can cause unnecessary pressure on your back and other body parts/organs causing pain. It will hurt you not the baby. It is suggested to sleep on your left side as this will increase the bloodflow to the uterus. However, if you don't sleep on your left side it's fine also.

They say that sleeping on your back can be hard for YOUR breathing, not the babies. I could be wrong, but I have never heard that it hurts the baby. You may want to google any baby sites or look into some "what to expect" books. You can find them at walmart. Good luck! :)

From my understanding when you lay on your back your heavy uterus sits directly on two very important veins that keep blood flowing to the bottom of your body. Laying on your back slows blood flow to the rest of your body and can make for worse varicose veins and worse swelling of your feet and ankles.

I asked my dr about this and he said that laying on your back is not harmful and that it would affect you before it would affect your baby.
