Same reason Yahoo did the exact same thing . They're anti-American .
Yahoo was called-out by countless angry users when they ignored Memorial Day . They responded by posting lame excuses / LIES and I don't think it worked . I know I didn't buy their BULLsh__ excuses !
EDIT** - I should've added that while Yahoo ignored Memorial Day , they also saw no problem in promoting foreign holidays .
And if anyone cares to check , there were two blogs dedicated to this .

I think you'll find the answer is that Google is celebrating the start of the modern satellite/space era with Sputnik.
As for the other days it has celebrated they are all without exception major days to at least 1/3rd or more of the worlds population, or mark major leaps forward for mankind as a whole be it in humanties or science.
Chinese New Year isn't just celebrated by the Chinese, it's celebrated throught SE Asia by nearly 2 billion people, unlike the USA's Memorial day which is celebrated by the USA alone, which accounts for under 5% of the worlds total population.

One more example of the self-loathing and guilt that follows success in capitalism. In order to feel better about their obscene wealth, they offer to give your money away. That makes them seem compassionate and humane. Then the fall in with the DemoMoveOn.org party line and hate anything capitalist conservatives love--democracy, family, the American dream, and our troops. All of the libs on here will patronize you and jest that you are making something out of nothing, but this is Google's not so subtle slap in the face to the society that enabled them to succeed in the first place. Like good conservatives, we will continue to fight and die to preserve their right to show us disrespect. Don't take it too personally. Like parenting, principled politics can be a thankless job.

Okay seriously....you have to calm down about the communists okay. I know Fred Thompson still thinks there is a USSR but there's not. It's gone. Bye. See ya. We won the cold war. You have to get over your insecurities.
Sputnik was an incredible feat of human engineering and imagination. It's okay to say "good job guys"
And seriously....because google mentions it they're holding it "over American holidays" You need to do a google search on July 4th....
And really there is no pill you can take to make it bigger. So just deal with it okay?

Don't you know??? It's no longer politically correct to recognize our own holidays, but if we miss other holidays we'll be accused of being discriminatory?
What a backwards country we live in...

Oh, crap. You caught Google as being part of the liberal socialist conspiracy. What are we going to do now to further propagandize young people's minds?
C'mon, people. Why are we arguing over the patriotism of Google artwork?
