Which came first? The name or the state?
I don't know, Carolina, Georgia, and Virgina are relatively normal womens names. Once you start naming them Pennsylvania and Idaho (HA!! I da ho! ) you have crossed the moron line.

I think the names were in use long before Carolina or Virginia became states.

Depends on the state. I know both a Carolina and a Virginia, and I guy I knew once had a dog named Michigan, which was cute (he got her while he was there).
Can't think of too many state names that would be oterwise appealing.
(and Mrs. Incredible...Asia is not a country).

The examples that you gave are examples of states being named after people not the other way around.
That being said, I personally wouldn't do it but there are quite a few that are perfectly "acceptable." I've known a couple of Dakota's, a Montana, a load of Virginias, etc.
It's better than Apple or Dweezel or any number of the horrid confections Hollywood has dumped on innocent children.

I think its strange, my friend used to date a guy named Minnesota! They were from Baltimore! I know some women are named Georgia, Carolina and Virginia, those aren't so strange. But still......

As long as they're not naming the poor kid New Hampshire or West Virginia, I think it's cute. I hate when parents name their kids after months. Who wants to be January their whole life?

It makes them sound like they belong in a soap opra.
Tex has kindnapped my illigitimant baby 'gunner' and taken him to Dekoda where they are going to meet his new girlfriend Virginia. Tex doesn't realize verginia is his second cousin who was married to his business partner Slade from wisconsinn which is also Slades childs name from Virginia (the woman).
So, if you don't want your child to marry his second cousin don't give it a state or TV name.
Our friends names there son Riker I just call him #1.

I always tell my friends that they should think about the kid when he is in school. there are many bullies out there these days and it is hard enough to be a kid. Giving your child a name that could potentially bring on more humiliation should be considered. I do not see anything wrong with those two names, but just keep in mind when they get to school.
