Another question--can a gun shot wound in the abdomen cause someone to go in a coma or to be unconscious for long, long periods of a time in a hospital? If not, where do you have to be shot where you have to be in a coma but can eventually get out of the hospital walking, talking and darn near back to normal again? (This is for a story i'm writing)

As the previous poster noted, a gunshot wound that's complicated by an infection could leave someone in the ICU for a while and then result in full recovery. The infection could cause altered mental status by itself or the patient may have to be sedated for a long period of time to permit mechanical ventilation (breathing on the machine).

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a complication of major trauma that would end up with someone being critically ill and sedated in the ICU for a long time and then get better (or die).

One point, however, is that in modern medicine, victims of major trauma with life-threatening complications rarely walk out of the hospital. They stay in the hospital until they're halfway well and then move to a skilled nursing facility to get their strength back and complete their healing. They then walk out of the skilled nursing facility!

I will pray for you - was it accidental? or intentional shooting? How awful. Babies are very very resiliant - you'd be surprised at what they can bounce back from. For instance, up until the last half of the century, babies that needed surgeries of any kind, including open-heart, were NOT given any anesthesia - they were only given "paralyzing" type meds to keep the baby still - I guarantee there is a reason to why they have only left gauze - they are drs and know what they are doing.

yes, thats a good place just say the body was fighting a onset of infection from the gunshot, but after being unconcious for a while the aggressive medical treatment worked
