Which film version do you have in mind.I would imagine that both of them have the Ahab allusion. Ahab was a wicked king in the Old Testament. The prophet Elijah predicted an unhappy death for him. In the King James version of the Bible we are told that Elijah said he would be left with nothing with which to p**s against the wall. Symbolically, the amputation of a leg is close to the amputation of a phallus.

I think the characters are Ishmael, Ahab and Starbuck. They reveal what Moby Dick means to them as they gaze upon the doubloon.
