Levy, 64, a DEMOCRAT and first-term mayor, told an Atlantic City newspaper last fall that he had misrepresented his 20-year military service. Federal prosecutors are investigating whether his claims led to him receiving higher veterans' benefits than he would otherwise be due.

Last fall, the Press of Atlantic City reported that the Vietnam veteran's claims that he was a member of the Green Berets were untrue. He apologized, but federal authorities have been looking into whether the 64-year-old Levy made that claim to increase his veterans' benefit payments.

Jacobs said in the statement that the mayor was in discussions with the U.S. Attorney's office about resolving the investigation in a "fair and expeditious" way. Levy allegedly took in about $25,000 in extra benefits payments as a result of the falsification.

I don't think so. I think Rush was referring to people who call his show and claim to be veteran's or soldiers just to add credibility to their comments. I'm not surprised that he was attacked by many folks who have a deep seeded dislike for him who made it sound as though he was being "unamerican." By purposely misrepresenting what he said and characterizing him as unpatriotic, they were trying to add credibility to themselves as "loyal patriotic Americans." This may be okay for the average John Doe to spew off such remarks, especially after a few beers, but we should expect greater honesty and integrity from the high profile individuals who are in elected positions or are running for public office.

I think you're blowing this out of proportion. Rush was strictly referring to soldiers like Jesse MacBeth, those who claim to serve in Iraq, and then tell falsehoods to the media about their experiences. MacBeth went on to say the US was condoning what would amount to war crimes. I hope those that claim war crimes are occurring don't use sources like that.

Anyway, this mayor of AC is a non-issue concerning Rush. He lied about his service just to get money, which is more commonplace than being treasonous like MacBeth was. He wasn't pretending to be a war hawk or anything. I'm not excusing his actions at all, I just think you're looking into it too much.

At the time of the discussion, Rush was referring to more recent examples, but in the broader definition of "phony soldier," the (former) mayor would have fit the description.

This has absolutely nothing to do with what Limbaugh was talking about.

That miserable disgusting, ignorant, hypocritical scumbag Limbaugh was saying that any veteran of the Iraqi war who criticizes the war was a "phony" soldier, and thus not a credible critic of the administration's abject failure in Iraq.

It has nothing to do with politicians padding their resume or other veterans scamming the system for increased veteran's benefits.

Seems to me there is no shortage of fake vets in the good old US nowadays. Just look at George W's glowing record in the National Guard. Good to see at least one of the fakers having to explain himself. Hope he ends up in Levonworth with George W in the next cell.
