Seems that Rational thinking of a scientist or an atheist would be an admirable quality, especially with what we know about religion and it's dwindling likeliness.

Fact.....Jesus has no known writings...ever (although there are excerpts from the Bible where Jesus wrote as in John 8:6, yet he does not have his own journal or book in the Bible) His execution was not recorded by Pontius Pilate (whom kept detailed records of such things.) Furthermore, noone that wrote the Bible had ever actually met Jesus, most of the New Testament comes from the dreams and visions of Paul before Matthew or Mark wrote their Gospels. So with this in mind why is it that our elected officials must be Christian in order to become President?

Whatever happened to the first ammendment bill of rights guarantee of the seperation of the church and state?

Do we want a President that believes and follows what is said in Deuteronomy 13:6-10? Look it up.

Being an Atheist is a guarantee that he or she will not be elected. The CLEAR majority of Americans are Christian conservative. So we wish a President with the same ideals and morals.

And yes, I do hope the President uses the Bible for guidance.

Being an atheist does not mean you are automatically a rational thinker. I would vote for an atheist, but they cannot mock religion, like you are doing.

The separation of church and state are not garunteed by the 1st amendment. It garuntees that the state shall not pass any laws creating a religion nor impose laws against the free practice of it.

That is the Old Testament, not the New Testament.

I think it would be fantastic to have an atheist president, and I would absolutely vote for them if their general platform made sense to me. I would not vote for them simply based on their religion though.

To the people that are blindly supporting only christian candidates, when is the last time any candidate was really a good person? Most candidates are christian and are just as much terrible people as anyone else. Here's a fun fact - religious people are just people, no better and no worse than anyone else. It's your daily choices that define you, not if you believe in some book and some invisible being that can't and will never be proven correct or incorrect.

How about Bush? He's christian to a fault - he can't think for himself so he's needed people telling him what to think his whole life, which churches excel at doing. Despite his over-abundance of "moral" guidance, look at his actions. Is it christian to support the destruction of the environment? Is it christian to allow people to die in the streets without health care and food? Is it christian to allow companies to profit at the expense of human lives and safety? How are these christian acts?

People that are really smart and rational are going to be the best leaders, not somebody who is claiming to be a moral guide due to reading a 2000 year old novel.

Christians - why don't you close the bible and open your eyes for once?

It MIGHT make me more likely to CONSIDER them. I personally don't care if the candidate is blue and worships Cheez Wiz. I think I'd be more likely to trust an atheist to deal with foreign policy decisions however!

The separation of church and state is/was a great idea but never actually followed 100% ever. Look at the "In God We Trust" on US money for proof of that. And don't bother trying to tell anyone about the history of Jesus. It's not worth it.

And for the "wholly holy" people that think atheists have no morals: I think more people should practice what they preach. Do you volunteer at food banks and give your extra clothes to the homeless? Would you give your last dollar to a starving mother and child? If not, then try learning more about what Jesus taught! Being a compassionate person has absolutely nothing to do with religion. And being religious doesn't automatically make you a moral person.

In my opinion, an atheist is just as bad as a religious follower. Essentially, both sides claim that they definately know the answer to life after death. How can anyone really know the truth? By stating there is no God or that there is a God, you leave no room for argument or discussion. This is not the kind of person we need as president. I personally feel that one of the most important traits of a president would be one that is open minded, one that will listen to people from all walks of life.

I expect that an atheist candidate would be unelectable in this country as it is now. Case in point, see the first answer. Although we have a state separation of state and religion, religion is a huge part of American culture and people vote and behave according to their religion. Most people would believe that an atheist cannot make sound judgments because he/she lacks a god telling him/her how to behave and so would think this person incapable.
I would happily vote for a person, regardless of their religious background, if I felt they were capable and had a strong record of legislation that I approve of.

Belief in God is an excellent quality that all politicians should have. It shows the wisdom to know there are more things in this universe than anyone can grasp or imagine. It shows a bit of humble pie. An atheist says there is nothing else after this life. If that is so, what stops you from doing whatever you want without eternal ramifications? Just going to jail, paying a fine, or being put to death is not enough of a deterrent. The threat of eternal damnation is a major portion of our morals as a civilization. Not to say an atheist can't have morals. They can. But I believe a faith in a higher authority - one beyond the comprehension of humans - is integral to being a great leader.

And since over 90% of the nation believes in some form of God, an atheist is unelectable.

Also, there is an abundance of historical records detailing a man named Jesus Christ walking the earth some 2000 years ago who was crucified. The debate isn't over his existance; it is about his claim of being the Son of God.

I would vote for an atheist over anyone else.

It would be wonderful to have a rational and moral person in the White House, rather than a bigot who believes in fairy tales and makes our country the laughingstock of the world.

Yes I would vote for them, but they would not win! I don't vote along the lines of what religion a candidate is.
As for President everyone of them say they are to get the vote and even show up at church to make it look good.
A christian should follow the ten commandments!
Like shall not kill for example!
I don't think god has a clause in there that allows for it if you are president!
No, their just fake Christians to get the votes!!!

Personally I think I am going to vote for myself because by the looks at our canidates for president they dont have any qualities that will keep our country from certain destruction. None of them look to have any values from Christ so I worry about any of them becoming our new president. They are just playing the political game to win votes.
