considering this is the 21st century and we have all the technology, i believe that the standard or "stick shift" is antiquated and should be put in the Smithsonian Museum. anyone else agree?

Wow, I didn't realize how strongly people felt about manual transmissions, but to each his/her own. The extra cost of everything associated with an automatic transmission is so worth it to not have to multi task while you're driving. And as for this quote: "To most passengers, a smoother ride, matched to actual road conditions, is far more pleasurable; to others the noticeable jolts and annoying whines and the sluggishness of an automatic don't matter." I have NEVER been in a car with a manual transmission that didn't jerk or whine or grind when the driver changed gears. I get car sick in cars w/manual transmissions from all the jerking they do. Nope, I've had SEVERAL people over the years try to convert me to manual and it'll never happen.

Absolutely not!
Sure, it's convenient to avoid shifting yourself, but there are several costs associated with using a so-called "automatic" transmission.
One obvious cost is efficiency and fuel consumption. Because an automatic cannot anticipate upcoming road conditions, it will always waste fuel when compared to a human who can see the road, make decisions, and plan ahead. This is in addition to the excess weight it add to the car, and the loss of power due to the inefficiency of the power train (i.e. converting energy of a rotating crankshaft to a fan that makes hydraulic liquid swirl around, and then converting what's left of that energy back into rotational motion of the wheels -- to get an idea of how much energy is wasted, try TOUCHING the tranny, after it has been shifting for a while!)
Furthermore, carburetors and ignition systems are nowadays controlled less by a gas pedal and more by a computer chip with inputs from the transmission. This leads to even grater inefficiencies and miscalculation, when the "automatic" transmission anticipates incorrectly.
Another (probably greater) cost is wear and tear on the other parts of the car. When there is incorrect matching of engine RPMs to road speed and torque requirements, something must take up the slack -- and it's not just the transmission. Other parts are jolted and stressed with mismatched forces, which a good driver would avoid. (Of course, a poor shifter may do worse, but replacing a clutch is much cheaper than replacing an automatic transmission!)
Finally, there are some intangibles. To most passengers, a smoother ride, matched to actual road conditions, is far more pleasurable; to others the noticeable jolts and annoying whines and the sluggishness of an automatic don't matter. (Some may even like the transmission "hump".) To some, however, the ride (or drive) is far more pleasurable, when controlled by a human driver's brain (and eyes) instead of a dumb (blind) hydraulic system.

Ever heard of DRIFTING? Cant do that in an automatic. Standards are alot more convient for the honda civic world. It should be a crime to have a automatic civic. Standards are basically controlled by you. they are much esierto work on, way better sounding, and are so much more fun to drive than a boring automatic. you can soupe up a automatic as much as you can soupe up a standard but you are going to get more power and performance out of a standard when you do so. and personally i think that it doesnt matter if your car is a standard or automatic when driving in a city. i think its about if you can stand driving a standard in the city. Hondas are made to stop/go traffic. Thats my opinion.

Only real men love stick shift. It's the fun in it. Driving a stick is what makes a true racer. It's what makes a sports car a sports car. Anyone driving around in a automatic sports car is lame. If you're a guy, just cut off your balls and hang em. Even females love manuals. More power since you can rev higher and control your shifts. I understand the automatic need for luxury cars, but either than that...a stick is ALWAYS better.
I agree with "Pheo"
"Maybe you think it is antiquated since you are not coordinated enough to drive one." muahaha that's a hilarious one.

I strongly disagree. Nascar has manual, F1 has manual, Top Fuel dragsters have manual, Monster trucks have manual, ETC ETC. And why is it that all the race vehicles have manuals? Because better control of the vehicle. A manual trans vehicle can stop faster than a auto. A manual trans vehicle can rev higher than an auto with out a chip. And most important a when your flying around a tight corner you don want it in O/D-auto, NO! you want it in 2nd or 3rd-manual

Standard transmissions are - as stated - for better control - you have no transmission control with an automatic - a computer controls it.
- Manuals are better for snowy/muddy /rainy conditions - while automatics are better for sunny/dry conditions.
- Manuals get you better milage then automatics do.
-Automatics are mostly used today in vehicles for ease of driving/high end luxury cars. 99% of the older musclecars/factory screemers used standard transmissions.
- High performance cars today use standard transmissions.
- Its a fact that older lawntractors all used manual type transmissions - since most people today are so used to automatic trannys, nearly all of them are made automatic/hydrostatic style .

nope, manual offers better control, better throttle response, more reliability at upgraded hp numbers, easier repairs, lighter transmissions, more breaking power...the list goes on. Even with the newest padel shift manumatics and clutchless manuals (technically those are autos...) manual transmissions will remain the option of choice for anyone who wants good performance, good reliability, or just better gas mileage

Your kidding right? Then why ride on two wheel motorcycles when it we have the technology to make 4 wheel vehicles (cars)?
In fact why bother with cars? Public transportation's (and taxis in a pinch) can do all that same job of getting me (you) there.

Or we can enjoy the experience of driving. Just thinking out loud.
Good Luck and drive your auto safely.

I think your thinking is "antiquated"! Manual shift cars are so-o-o much more fun to drive! To me, an "automatic sports car" is an oxymoron!

"Stick shift" is for the motor enthusiast who like thrashing there car round a race track , but for a business man who has a comapny car doing 60k miles (ish) a year then the auto'box is the obvious answer

Absolutely not. I enjoy my 6sp manual car. I do also do occasional track racing that gives me more control over the vehicle and gearing.
Maybe you think it is antiquated since you are not coordinated enough to drive one.
