I went to the doctor a couple of days ago for a regular checkup. The doc noticed that i cut myself. I didnt think she would notice because my cuts are pretty much healed. Anyway she was worried about them. She asked if my family was aware. I said no. I want to keep it that way. I am not suicidal. I don't do it all of the time and it not something am proud of. I am seeing a psychologist. I just dont want my parents worrying about me. My can't say anything to my parents because of doctor/patient confidentiality, right?? By the way I am over18 and in college.

In the USA, if you are over 18 and not imminently suicidal or homicidal, then no - your physician cannot contact anyone (including your parents) without your express, written permission.

It depends on whether it is a Doctor (MD) or a psychologist.
Some MD's actually believe in the Hippocratic Oath and will not tell anyone anything (as it ought to be).
Others too fearful of being sued or have their license questioned --- pretty much will open the records to everyone but you --- HIPAA encourages this behavior.
Before you go to a doctor ask their views on this topic then act accordingly --- Be careful what you sign for "insurance" --- you may be giving up privacy rights --- Read carefully and modify. HIPAA and some other law allow the police to get access to your records. (Look up Soviet Medical Privacy for some background on Hillary care)

For minor things -- use a silly name --- pay cash and do not go back.

If you are talking about hurting yourself or someone else, they have the obligation to speak up, if you have scars or scabs, that has already been done, and since they are not life threatening, there is no need to involve others, the doctor would only speak with you and treat you, but you have to let her/him know what is troubling you in order for them to help you and/or refer you to someone who can.

True story.... I went to a shrink for depression. I was crying and he came over and started to stroke my hair and hug me. I thought he was conforting me right? Wrong, he unzipped his pants and stuck his pennis in my mouth...He doesn't want me to tell anyone. Guess thats Dr./ Patient confidntiality, right?
