About six months ago I had a horse riding accident. What helped me was that I would ride out with friends that I knew had very calm horses. I would ride close to them, this gave me the security that the horse was comfortable and probably would not act up while being close to other horses that it knew. Every time I would get nervous I would take a deep breath and tell myself to relax. The horse I was riding when I had the accident was a big gelding. So when I started riding again I rode a smaller, older horse she was about 13-14 hands. I felt like I had a better ability to handle her if she acted up because she was not nearly as big or powerful as the horse that I had my accident on, and if something happened that I came off, I was closer to the ground. Other than that I just had to put the hours on myself again to get my confidence back. I still get a little Leary every once in a while if the horse starts acting up, but I find that I do better when I ride a horse that I am comfortable with on the ground and off. I hope something here helps you and good luck.

I read an excellent article about just this thing in a magazine not too long ago, unfortunately I can't remember which one or who wrote it to give them credit. Anyway, it said to start off by doing something you are comfortable with (even if it is just walking in to where the horse is). Then start the routine like you're going to catch and saddle your horse. Whenever you feel panicky, stop. Start all over again the next day or in a few hours or whatever. Do this over and over until you can proceed to the next step without panicking. Keep pushing at but don't cross over the line of panic. Be patient with yourself and give yourself plenty of time to do this. You are not alone, there are lots of people who have gone through just this very thing. Good luck!

I had the same problem a few years ago when my pony got spooked threw me off and I fractured my arm badly....just take it slow and your confidence will slowly return too. Someone told me that if you dont feel confident and happy the horse wont either and only bad situations can come from that....i hope it all works out for you as i know how it feels and i feel more confident than ever with my riding now...Good luck!

Its not easy to get back up in the saddle after taking a fall, but thats just what you need to do! I would think to get your confidence up, you just need to psych yourself up. Tell yourself you can do this. I would also be around the horse and take it treats like carrots and apples to kind of build up a relationship between you and the horse. More of a trust thing for you than that for the horse....

I wish you luck!

it can be real hard to get your confidence back after a nasty accident or fall. i would suggest that you start by having riding lessons at a reputable or recommended riding school. explain your previous riding experience and the accident that you suffered. they will then usualy put you on a safe confidence giving horse. take things slowly and don't expect too much too soon or be too hard on yourself. it is natural to feel shaken and wary after something bad has happened.

i really hope you get your confidence back.

Ride bare back. Feel the horse. Start slow, trott max gait. Practice figure 8's. Get back on. Can't count the times I've hit the ground, still love riding.

Find a nice riding school, explain Your situation and ask for some lessons on a good old plodder. It will not take long before you are asking to ride a more livelier mount.
