The V is the position of the pistons in an engine (V engine).

The number after the V (like V6) is the number of pistons. So V6 is six cylinder engine.

There a numerous configurations for automobile engines.. a typical small car has a 4 cylinder engine almost always in a direct line,, known as an in-line 4 cyclinder engine. Larger engines can be manufactured as either and in-line 6 cyclinder or more typically a V shaped configuration with 3 cyclinders on each side of the engine block.

V6 and V8 engines are typicall built in the V configuration with either 3 or 4 cylinders on either side of the engine block.

It is the piston configuration. If you look at the front of the motor it takes the shape of a V. On a v6, you have 3 pistons on each side, and 4 on each side of a v8
