The lessons I learned from Mary Poppins changed as I grew older.
I thought Mary Poppins was for kids. It taught me about magic and imagination. Doing your chores without complaining made them go faster. It taught me that sometimes adults can be a lot of fun. I learned that I could love beautiful music (Feed the Birds) and not just kid songs. (And I learned how to say Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards!)
When I saw the movie again for the first time as an adult...oh man, was it a different message. This movie was not for kids. It was a movie that struck to the very heart of being a good parent.
Listening to your children, taking time to be with them and learning who they are. Enjoy their youth and innocence. Don't just go through life thinking they will follow your every wish and desire, children have feelings and emotion and life stories that are a whole world apart from an adult...and a parent should be a part of it.
I also learned that when life gets hard, your job is terrible, and things just aren't going well...go "fly a kite" and bring the family along. Your family can help get you through the worst of it!
