Well, I'm tempted to agree with this (rather cynical) prediction:
"As for predictions, I'd say the only thing I'm reasonably sure of is that it won't go to a post-modern male novelist; the Academy is unpredictable, but they almost never pick similar winners two years running, so Pamuk winning last year should mean that Eco, Rushdie, Auster, Pynchon, DeLillo et al are out of luck this year."
And yet - why do I get the feeling that it's going to be an American white male named Cormac McCarthy.
Maybe because he lives here in Santa Fe, not far from me. And maybe because he's such an incredible writer.

Ken Kesey used to argue that Larry McMurtry would get it. I tend to doubt it, but I think it would be a very good choice. Not that everything McMurtry ever wrote is good, but a lot of it is wonderful and we tend to judge great writers by their best work, not their worst.
