Why should G.S. expext to win right now. Does having the biggest payroll mean you should win right now?

I am sick of this reasoning...The reason it is the highest payroll is because he is over paying a lot of his talent. How did that investment on Roger Clemens pay off? Just because he shells out the money does not mean it is going to be the best team.

When they won the 4 World Series they had a perfect combination of home grown talent and free agents IN THEIR PRIME.

G.S. and Cashman has put these teams together and made bad deals. But I guess it is easier to just blame Torre insead of looking in a mirror on who made these bad deals.

If just spending money made good teams the Knicks would be champions. but we all know that the team they have is not woth what they are paying.

The same can be said for the Yankees.

Yeah I know he is the Boss and can demand winning, but just as people say torre is responsible for getting the talent to play, G.S. is repsonsible for paying the right players. And he has not done that. Just because he spends money and is the Boss does not get him a free pass from being part of the problem.

Too many players in their decline. Damon, Jeter, Clemens, Petitte, Abreu, Rivera, Giambi, Mussina... all these guys are passed their prime, and are not close to the players they once were.

They all have flashes, but are not the consistent playres that they once were. The money is clearly mispent. Torre does deserve some of the blame, but Casman equally as much.

I think that is more than the money spent, Steinbrenner feels t hat they should always win and I think that he has felt for the past few years that Torre has lost the tema with his message. That being said I think it does come back to the architects of the team as well. The only reason that Cashman is not on the block is that when he wanted to leave to run a team his way George told him to do it with the yankees, that is when they started developing talent instead of spending for Kevin Brown past his prime. Before that every move went through the Boss and now he is building from within...but they still expect to win. It may be unrealistic but it is the demands of George. I think he only has himself to blame for putting together a group of talented but not on the same page players. Johnny Damon may be the last big money throw away for them for a while, they would still make the A-Rod deal everyday of the week and so would any other Gm, Owner in that postion. They will still go after the best ptiching availabel to fill holes but a mojority of their team will be made up of home grown talent until George fires Cashman in two years. Cashman has been on record saying that he did not support the Superstar movement that brought all the guys in since they started not winning the Championships!

Agreed!!!

When most teams are making a run at a championship, no matter what sport it is, there is usually a good mix of homegrown talent, free agents and vetern players. The yankees have basically bypassed the first two key components in the last 6 years and basically tried to buy veteran players who were good "back in the day:" Giambi, Sheffeild, Matsui, Mussina, Clemens, Damon, and the list goes on.

I thought this year was going to be different because they have nurtured good players (and didnt trade them away) like : Wang, Cabrera, Chamberlain, Huges, and Cano to name a few, but it wasnt in the cards. Cashman has tried to put an end to G.S.' spend first approach to winning a championship, but the Boss ultimately has the final say in everything since he signs the checks.

Maybe, he'll realize that in order to win you cannot trade away all your good prospects for over the hill, has been talent.

It sounds like this is more of a statement than a question and I think you're on to something. They are paying Clemens tons of money and they got less than an inning from him. They are paying Pavano tons of money and they get nothing from him. They have tons of pitchers and they don't want to use them at all. They had a 5 run lead in game 3 and they bring in Joba and Mo, so essentially they weren't really available in game 4 if needed. They also had Mussina, who they pay a ton of money for, and they weren't willing to allow him to start. I'm not a huge fan of Moose, but he looked really good his last few starts so I think it was a real panic move not starting with him; especially since history has proven that starting a player on 3 days rest (Wang) is not usuually a good idea... another panic move.

Back to your question... Why should George Steinbrenner demand winning? Because it's his team, he pays the salaries and it's his right to demand winning. I really don't think Torre has done a good job and it is time for a change. Unfortunately they may lose a bunch of good players, but these are older guys and they don't have much left anyway. Rivera looked great in the games he played in the playoffs, but if you followed the Yankees you'll know that he did not look the same this year. I really don't think he has that much left. Posada had a great year and it would be nice to re-sign him, but I'm not sure it make sense at his age. A-Rod... I don't think he's worth the salary. Okay, he had a homerun when they were essentially out of it, but he came up in at least 5-6 meaningful moments with men on base and he never once got a hit. In fact, he either struck out each time or barely made contact. I'm through with him and will not care much to see him go.

Spending the kind of money he does, he can demand winning. Of course, it doesn't mean it will happen. I believe part of the pay Yankee players get is putting up with the fans in NY and George. You get paid more, he wants more. Same is true in business, you an exec 200k, you expect more from that person than one getting 50k a year. When someone gets paid a lot and doesn't live up to the expectations, all the naysayers come out. When it works out, they have their tails between their legs. No team, not even the Yankees want to pay a lot and not get what they paid for. Clemens didn't work out, how about Meche of KC, Beltran, etc, etc.? Guess A-Rod is a bargain to them since some is paid by Texas. Whay aren't you screaming about the money he gets? Not many teams can afford to pay that kind of money. George wants to win, give him credit for that.

Torre isnt responsibile for it, but the deciisions he makes are mind boggling.

WHY BRING IN MUSSINA IN THE 3RD INNING? Use someone else! You should have put Ian Kennedy in the playoff roster instead of Mussina so he can pitch for you if youre team gets messed up in a jam!

George bought the Yankees in the 70's for one reason. To win and bring championships to the Yankees. Dont win? Yer out.

Georgie doesnt spend 200,000,000 for nothing. He pays to win, thats all he wants. A championship and a ring. Playoffs isnt good enough for him because the Yankees always make October baseball. Its WINNING he cares about. And if the Yankees dont win a WS in 6 years, he dumps and reloads.

I do not agree that the Indians "squeeked" by. Cleveland has had some excellent starting pitching and relievers all year. Stop putting down the merits of the winning team to bolster your position. Rivera was hittable, Betancourt was not. And as for hitters, look at Hafner - he had a bad season, by his standards but he hit a clutch hit in Game 2. Bugs and all that other nonsense are lamer excuses.

Cashman is the biggest reason for the team's success. George wants to win because he's competetive and he had the best team out there, they just underachieved and didn't perform to their abilities by a long way. The job of the manager is to get his players to perform to the best of their abilities and Torre's got to accept some blame for not being able to get the most out of so many of his guys. George has the right to be disappointed in paying the guys that much money and having them not earn it for him. Fair's fair, they didn't lose because of their youth, they lost because A-Rod, Jeter, Abreu, Posada, Wang, all pulled a no-show and Cleveland managed to barely squeek by them because of it. If ANY of them shows up and plays even average ball, the Yankees win but they failed to bat their weight and were patheticly under achievers.

That payroll means nothing. The Yankees have a number of players that are in the peak ends of the contracts.

As For Steinbrenner he has always demanded winning from his managers and players and this year was no different.
