Buy a 7 day Travelcard for Zones 1-2 at £23.20

If you buy one day tickets it will cost you £5.10 each day and you won't be able to use public transport before 9:30 (or £6.60 if you want to travel before 9:30)
If you get an Oyster card, these prices are reduced by 50p per day and you will have to pay a £3 refundable deposit.

A 7 day card is therefore 20p more expensive if you only travel after 9:30 and you can take the Osyter card home for another trip. (no £3 deposit required for a 7 day card)

Yes, buy an Oyster card -- but the way I would do it (especially if you are planning on taking public transportation a lot, and generally you will be if you're taking in all the sights) is to get five 1-day travelcards put on there.

The pay-as-you-go plan can get a bit pricey if you're getting on and off the tube quite a bit. 5 days of travelcards shouldn't be more than £20-25. The prices will differ depending on how many zones you will be traveling in, but if you're just staying in central London, a zone 1 card will be just fine. It goes pretty far.

Go up to a ticket office at any tube station and ask for an Oyster for unlimited travel for 5 days.

I hope you enjoy London, it's wonderful here!

Another good reason for the Oyster Card is that you will stick out less as a tourist as the locals all use the oyster card (a card that is like a credit card that you swipe on the top of the gates to enter the tube station) and remember to stay to the left on the escalators. The best deal depends on how much walking versus riding you plan on doing and in what zones. Top up and you can go to any zone and continue to add money as you need, if you buy a unlimited travel pass you will need to purchase for zones (probably 1 and 2) and you don't have to add money to travel to those places within the zone. You can find more information on the zones, cost for day passes versus oyster passes etc at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/default.aspx if that doesn't work just go to http://www.tfl.gov.uk and click on tickets. You can also look at the underground maps on here and see if there is contruction or a delay on one of the lines.

Good luck. Have fun!

Oyster is best if you plan to do a lot of travelling in those five days otherwise a one day or a weekend travelcard is another option at £5.70 per day after peak time and can be bought at that price from Heathrow.

Buy an Oyster Card (Costs £3) and then top up with cash and use as you go, it works out to be very cheap and very good cos you can just hop on a bus/tube and not worry about going to buy a ticket.
