maybe you DID go a little far, but the whole point of the story is that the boyfriend will never stop loving his girlfriend. I think that its a good story, and that you shouldnt look too deep into it. And no, just because its fake, doesnt mean it was never there. :)

Death occurs only to the living. The fake rose was not alive, hence it cannot have any death. Fake one was very much there,as described but the condition of its death is not applicable.
