Hi DIY Doc, we have common land in England, land which was given to the people when the Magna Carta was written and signed

With all due respect; and not knowing at all how YOU might define "common"; it's very unlikely that any "land" exists; UNOWNED in 2007.

It also might largely depend on where you are; relative to your intent. Example: There are no laws in the USA that state one cannot use a metal detector on a beach; or even in a Federal park; that I know of; however if in fact the property is Federally; or otherwise goverened WHAT YOU FIND; might not strictly be considered YOURS. Obviously lost watches/ coins; etc. are a minor thing in the grand scheme.

There are laws regarding Trespass; and in the case of privately owned land; you might risk harm or death to violate such laws.

No offense at all but if you know of any "COMMON LAND" let me know; I'd love to go back to the Homestead act of the early 19th century.

Just an add on. Why not buy a piece of land; SEED it and charge people who want to play with metal detectors.

I would think permission is needed to dig on the property. Too many people feel they do not need to refill the holes after digging so it makes it hard on others.

Its not the metal detector that you need permission for; its digging.
