I've been in the hospital more than once, and two of them for surgery (my very first surgery was brain surgery).

I was scared but I wasn't. My heart and soul wanted everything to be fixed and that kept me going.

10 years later I had my little boy in and out of the hospital and he has had several surgeries. To date he still isn't quite sure how he feels about all of it but he is glad that the final surgery was successful. I think my experience helped beyond the 'mom' thing.

It's different as an adult. You usually get a sedative before you get on the table, which does wonders for anxiety. You also get a little amnesia from the anesthetic...I remember hearing the first half of a joke as they started the IV, but I can't remember the punch line.

Coming to can be a lot like just waking up, although you might be disoriented for a litte bit. Individual reactions vary. And depending on what you have done, and your doctor's pain management strategy, you may have very little post-operative pain. I had a nerve block for some orthopedic surgery, and was completely pain-free for 24 hours following.

When I was 8 I had my tonsils out and I wasn't scared at all. I was actually too excited about all the ice cream I would be eating afterwards. But the ice cream thing is all a lie. You get popscicles and jello instead.
I've had two C sections and yes, I was scared for those. But not because they are major surgeries, but because my life was about to change forever. That's scarier than being cut open.
If you're scared, or are afraid at all, just tell your doctor and they will do the best to ease your fears.

yes I've been to the hospital heaps of times in my life time and had heaps of operations. You get used to it and in fact, when I was younger I used to love going to have an operation in hospital and I used to love the feeling of getting put under and rolled around in a hospital bed, getting wheeled down to theatre. My mum used to visit me every day and occasionally bring me a present when I was little. My last operation was when I was an adult a couple of years back and had a knee scraping done. It was only day surgery, but I didn't have too much discomfort. Now that I'm an adult though, I don't think I would like staying overnight in a hospital anymore.....mainly cause their beds would be too uncomfortable for me!

I think we all are scared when we go in for surgery. For me it was the idea of being put under. You know, being put to sleep for the operation. One wonders if they will ever open their eyes again. I call that the nearest scare to death there is. So I know how you felt. But I was an adult. Just call me a baby anytime it has to do with surgery!

Yes I have been through surgery...
Although I'll never remember it! :D

I was 6 months old when I had my first surgery..It was to remove my left eye
I had retinoblastoma as a baby (5 months old) and my parents had to bring me to the hospital. The next few days I was in surgery and they were removing my left eye. They removed the tumors, and shrunk down the tumors in my right eye via radiation (not safe for such a tender age! :( )
But that's my tale of surgery..

My appendix
Cysts removed off my ovaries and tubes
Two moles that they were worried might be cancerous

And now I'm being told I'm probably going to have to have surgery to be able to have children .. Oh the joy!

yeah.
I had to have my knee reconstructed.
I didn't think I was scared, but they said my heart was going really fast, so maybe I was, a little bit ... hehe
It was fun when I woke up, I was EXTREMELY high and I was singing the stupidest song at the top of my lungs in the recovery room and I didn't even think that there was anything unusual about that ... they could hear me all the way out in the waiting room ... sigh.
fun memories....
:O)
